Customs duty – what is it?

A customs duty is a levy that a country imposes on import or export of certain goods. Customs duties are to protect the domestic market and producers operating in a given country.
Is there a customs duty to be paid in the European Union?
Member States of the European Union are linked by the Customs Union. This means that no duty is charged for goods that are transported within the EU. The Canary Islands constitute an exception, as they belong to the Customs Union but are not subject to tax harmonization regulations.
Great Britain, on the other hand, is a country which, after leaving the European Union (and therefore also the Customs Union), developed its own tariff of customs duties.
